1) What example news story does the Factsheet use to illustrate Galtung and Ruge's News Values? Why is it an appropriate example of a news story likely to gain prominent coverage?

The earthquake in San Francisco that kills two hundred people. This story is likely to gain prominent coverage because it fits several of Galtung and Ruge’s new values. For example 
Continuity- earthquake aftermath abs recovery efforts will be continue in the news.

2) What is gatekeeping?

Gatekeeping is the process by which journalists and editors decide what news is published and how it is presented.

3) What are the six ways bias can be created in news?


Bias through selection and omission

Bias through placement

Bias by headline

Bias by photos, captions, and camera angles

Bias through use of names and titles

Bias by choice of words


4) How have online sources such as Twitter, bloggers or Wikileaks changed the way news is selected and published?


5) In your opinion, how has the digital age changed Galtung and Ruge’s news values? 


Immediacy has become more important due to the rise of 24/7 news and social media.

Continuity has been affected because news cycles move faster, and stories that once lasted for days now disappear quickly.

Negativity still dominates, but positive viral stories also gain traction more easily.


6) How would you update these news values for the digital age? Choose TWO of Galtung and Ruge's news values and say how they have been affected by the growth of digital technology.


Elite People - Traditionally, news focused on politicians, royals, and celebrities. Now, social media influencers and internet personalities also hold news value. A viral TikToker can have the same news impact as a Hollywood actor.

 Frequency - The speed of digital news means that stories are updated continuously rather than appearing as one major report. Live blogs, Twitter updates, and breaking news notifications ensure stories evolve in real time.
