What meanings are the audience encouraged to take about the two main characters from the opening of the film?

The audience is encouraged that the two main characters are young troublemakers who really do nothing but to bother other people such as the homeless guy.

How does the end of the film emphasise de Saussure’s belief that signs are polysemic – open to interpretation or more than one meaning?

The end of the film emphasises that signs are polysemic as there was a plot twist at the end to show that these two main characters were deaf due to the sign language however the ending was a plot twist that it opened a lot of meaning on the characters that couldn’t speak as instead of bullying them they were giving them something much more better.

What did Ferdinand de Saussure suggest are the two parts that make up a sign?

The signified which is the meaning that is intended from sign and the signifier which works with signified to combine into a sign.

What does ‘polysemy’ mean?

It means having or open to more than one meaning/interpretation.

What does Barthes mean when he suggests signs can become ‘naturalised’?

I think it’s when certain meanings has been created or brought into the society and we just accepted it and agreed upon it without questioning

What are Barthes’ 5 narrative codes?

The proairetic code, the cultural code, the semantic code, the symbolic code and the hermeneutic code.

How does the writer suggest Russian Doll (Netflix) uses narrative codes?

The writer uses symbolic code to show that in the opening the dolls seem to shrink.

An examples of icon, index and symbol.

Index:

Why are icons and indexes so important in media texts?
It’s important because it allows the writer/produce to communicate with the audience.

Why might global brands try and avoid symbols in their advertising and marketing?
Because different cultures might have a different meaning about that symbol such as the ok sign in Brazil it means something rude

Find an example of a media text (e.g. advert) where the producer has accidentally communicated the wrong meaning using icons, indexes or symbols. Why did the media product fail?

This media text is very debatable as it seems to be sexualising women and uses some sort of sexual humour such as “be delicious”

Find an example of a media text (e.g. advert) that successfully uses icons or indexes to create a message that can be easily understood across the world.

I chose this one as it motives people to buy Nike shoes and also gives them confidence  such as  “no matter what u r u can find ur greatness “
